What would you do if you knew that this week was your last week on earth?

This is not a question that we have to wonder about when it comes to Jesus Christ. The Bible records Jesus’ actions during his last week on earth. Luke 19:28-44 records the Triumphal Entry that Jesus made into Jerusalem. This was a direct fulfillment of a 500 year old prophecy made by the prophet Zechariah. In Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) it says, “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Today is Palm Sunday and it marks the beginning of what we in Christianity call Holy Week or Passion Week. It is the first day of Jesus’ last week on earth. Everything that means anything in Christianity culminates in this one short span of time.

When Jesus was nearing Jerusalem on the colt the people spread out their cloaks and palm branches on the ground in front of him because they recognized what his actions meant. It was at this time that Jesus was publicly claiming to be King. The people shouted this in Luke 19:38 (NIV) when they said, “”Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Riding in on the donkey signified a king coming in peace. These people understood that Jesus was the king, but they were looking for a conquering king, not a peaceful one. The same people that greeted Jesus saying “Hosanna” and “Blessed” were the very ones that only a few days later would shout “Crucify Him!”

Knowing that entering Jerusalem on this day would begin his final week, Jesus never turned around, he kept riding into what would be his earthy doom. Knowing that his days were short Jesus did not spend his time “living it up” but rather he spent his time preparing his people for life without him. I wonder how many of us, knowing our fate, would spend our last days and hours pouring into people? Jesus wept over Jerusalem because he knew that it would not stand for much longer. God would bring judgment down upon his chosen people for rejecting their Messiah. I wonder if Jesus weeps when he looks at America? A place that was once set apart from the world in that we were Christ-centered. O how far we have fallen, and I think Christ weeps for us because like Jerusalem, he sees are impending doom.

So what would you shout to Jesus? Hosanna in the highest!, Blessed is the king…, or Crucify him!? Will you be like the Jews and reject the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords? On this day he rode the donkey as a king coming in peace. When he returns as in Revelation 19, he will be riding on a horse and will be coming as a king that wages war! Get to know him before this happens!

Let’s celebrate this week for what it is, Jesus’ passion (suffering) week. Not an Easter commercial holiday about a bunny and eggs!

God Bless!
